Thomas Jefferson University
As you know, I founded the University of Virginia but some of you are aware of Thomas Jefferson University as well.
I actually knew about the college before I passed away on July 4, 1826, but I must admit its creation took me by surprise and caused me a bit of anxiety!
Dr. George McClellan founded the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1824. He named it after me to honor my passion for science and education, but he never actually asked for my permission beforehand.
When I found out about it, my feelings were a bit complicated. I was protective of my own school: At that point in my life, I was completely focused on building my proudest achievement: the University of Virginia. Because UVA also had a medical program, I worried that a prominent new medical school up north using my name would confuse people or draw top students away from my beloved "academic village."
So, while I had absolutely nothing to do with building it, I certainly knew it existed. I am amazed to see that what started as a small medical school in my final years has grown into the Thomas Jefferson University you know today.
