Friends to my peers
I have personally met all 12 of the first Presidents except James Polk, whose grandfather, father, and himself were nonetheless ardent Jeffersonians. The Tylers were especially close. John Tyler, Sr., and I were classmates and close friends. I later met his son and future President John Tyler, Jr., as a teenager in 1809 at their house. In 1782, after Mrs. Jefferson passed away, John Tyler, Sr., named his newborn daughter Martha Jefferson Tyler. So President Tyler has a sister named after me. When I myself passed away in 1826, John Tyler, Jr., gave a lengthy 4548-word eulogy for me on July 11, 1826.
