I eliminated all federal and internal taxes
I remind people that during my administration, I eliminated *all* federal and internal taxes. For example, I eliminated all excise taxes (taxes on production made in America) like on whiskey that led to the Whiskey Rebellion during the Washington Presidency, after which the tax continued through the Adams administration. It was very unpopular and I thought the tax was an infernal one. So I stopped it in 1802 during my Presidency.
Almost all tax revenues during my administration came from import duties and land sales taxes. I did not want to burden the American people. Nonetheless, I was able to reduce the national debt by 30% by reducing federal spending.
I was so popular that I won by a landslide in 1804, and could have served a third term, but I decided soon after that landslide that I would stop at two terms, which set a precedent for other Presidents to follow.
